LOOK CLOSER

The details that make the difference.

01

The finish is the distinction

Metal Black names the visual finish on the inactive panels. The mat uses L-TEK hard-pad construction with active PRO panels, aluminium borders and ABS bumpers; it is not an all-metal mat.

02

Four active arrow panels

Use the up, down, left and right inputs for DDR-style charts. The other visible panels complete the surface and are not extra directional inputs.

03

32-bit ARM controller

A high-speed controller supports 1000 Hz USB polling. High sensitivity and a low sensor stroke help register steps without a long panel movement.

04

A substantial base

The 18 kg build and anti-slip stands help the mat stay in position. Its 85 × 85 cm footprint gives you a clear size to plan around.

05

Bare feet or sports shoes

The PRO panels are designed for either approach. Choose secure, comfortable footing and start with controlled steps on a stable floor.

06

A detachable connection

The included USB-A to USB-B cable disconnects for moving or storage, and the recessed socket helps protect the plug during play.

01 / KNOW WHAT YOU ARE CHOOSING

A dark playing layout with a clear sense of direction

Metal Black gives your setup a dark central layout with clearly coloured direction arrows and contrasting metal-look inactive panels. The four active PRO panels register the inputs for your dance game. The name describes the finish, not an all-metal structure. A weighted base, aluminium borders, ABS bumpers and anti-slip stands make up the practical hard-pad construction.

Plan for the actual size

Allow for 85 × 85 × 3 cm and 18 kg, plus clear space around the mat to step off. Think about access and storage before choosing its place.

Add support if your setup calls for it

A Handbar PRO is a separate accessory for bar-supported play. Plan its space and assembly separately; a rail is not included with this mat.

02 / SOFTWARE AND CONNECTION

Start with StepMania 5.0 LTEK Edition on Windows

The mat reads your steps; the computer runs the game. Connect the included USB-A to USB-B cable, install the latest free LTEK Edition beta for Windows and check all four arrows. Automap helps with assignment, and manual mapping remains available when a controller combination needs it. Follow the tutorial before trying a difficult chart.

The mat is also designed for ITGmania and In The Groove setups. Configure and test its four arrows in the software you choose.

Make the timing your own

Use guided manual calibration for the display and audio you actually play with. The mat’s 1000 Hz polling specification is one part of the complete setup.

Check other platforms

A Mac needs a suitable rhythm game and, on USB-C-only models, an appropriate adapter. Classic PS1/PS2 play needs the separate L-TEK converter; USB alone does not establish universal console support.

03 / YOUR ROOM, YOUR ROUTINE

Make it work for your home—and make the design yours

Start with a level, stable surface and route the cable away from your feet. Footsteps can transmit vibration through a floor, so consider the room below and choose playing times that work for your household. If the game feels consistently early or late, use the timing guide before changing your stepping technique.

Optional artwork

Metal Black supports custom printing on the centre panel or the centre plus four arrows. Add the panel-customisation service to the same order and upload artwork you have permission to use.

Keep the layout readable

Follow the template when placing direction arrows. Custom panels ordered with the mat arrive fitted; the all-nine-panel print option belongs to PRO X rather than this model.

A GOOD FIRST EXPERIENCE

Your first song, in four steps

You can begin with an easy chart and learn the directions before working on speed or scores.

Already set up? Skip ahead ↓

  1. 01

    Choose a steady playing spot

Set the mat on a flat, stable floor with space to step off. Keep its USB cable clear of your feet and the route through the room. Check that the mat cannot rock or slide before you start.

  2. 02

    Connect the pad and game

Connect the included USB-A to USB-B cable to your computer. On Windows, install the latest free StepMania 5.0 LTEK Edition beta from our Software page. Your computer, screen and sound output complete the setup.

  3. 03

    Map the four arrows

Use Automap, then check each direction in the input settings. Assign inputs manually if your setup needs it. Follow guided timing calibration for your display and sound; an extra sensor is not required for manual calibration.

  4. 04

Learn one arrow at a time

Follow Ada and Kuba’s tutorial, then choose a slow song at an easy difficulty. Step on the matching panel when the moving arrow meets its target. Repeat a familiar chart before adding speed.

BEFORE YOU DECIDE

Good questions.
Useful answers.

Find the answer here, then follow the guide if you want the detail.

Is Metal Black made entirely from metal?

No. The name refers to the metal-look finish on the inactive panels. It uses the L-TEK hard-pad platform with a weighted base, active PRO panels, aluminium borders and ABS bumpers.

What do I need besides the mat?

A compatible computer, display, sound output and rhythm game. The USB-A to USB-B cable is included. For Windows, start with the free StepMania 5.0 LTEK Edition beta, check mapping and follow the beginner tutorial.

Get the recommended Windows software

Can I use a Mac or an older PlayStation?

For a Mac, choose a game that supports your macOS version; a USB-C-only computer needs an appropriate adapter or hub for the included cable. PS1/PS2 play uses a separate L-TEK PS2/PSX converter. Check your exact console and game before ordering.

Check computer and console compatibility

Does 1000 Hz mean the complete game responds in 1 ms?

No. It describes USB polling, with a nominal 1 ms interval. The computer, game, display and audio path add their own timing behaviour. Mapping and calibration remain part of setting up the game.

Work through timing problems

Can I use it in a shared home?

Yes, but plan the playing position and check sound and vibration in your own room. A hard mat does not make footsteps silent. Keep the surface stable and the cable clear.

Read the home-noise guide

Can I print my own artwork on it?

Yes, with the optional panel-customisation service: choose the centre or centre plus four arrows. Use the correct template and include readable arrows. The all-nine-panel option is available on PRO X, not Metal Black.
